Prehistoric uses of flint in NE Iberia

The lithic raw materials extraction activities that took place at prehistoric rock outcrops led to an anthropic modification of its natural layout and original topography, as well as the introduction of exogenous elements – mining instruments- for its exploitation. The intensity and recurrence of these extractive activities allow their archaeological recognition, as they generated particular contexts linked to the raw material extraction and its first transformation.

Based on specific cases of study, we intend to generate data that allows us to determine fundamental aspects of the productive processes’ first stages. That is to say:

• The initial phases of the lithic instruments’ production sequence, in which the raw material is transformed in order to achieve the instrument’s production and their transport;
• The guidelines followed in the raw material selection and rejection, according to their lithologies as well as their morphological characteristics;
