Using museums for the intercultural dialogue
Abuab, in English, Doors, is a project that aims to work on the use of Cultural Heritage as an instrument of social integration of refugees / Arab immigrants proposed by the Institució Milà i Fontanals of the CSIC, the University of Girona and the NGO Heritage for Peace and with the indispensable participation and collaboration of several museums in the city of Barcelona. We put together the management of cultural heritage, anthropology, history of art, pedagogy and archaeology in a multidisciplinary approach.
In this pilot project we focused on the use of cultural heritage as an instrument for the social integration of refugees /Arab immigrants. We promoted group visits to various museums located in the city of Barcelona by Arab immigrants /refugees coming from the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean and the Near East. The visits took place at the History Museum of Catalonia, the History Museum of Barcelona, the National Archaeological Museum of Catalonia and Caixaforum in Girona. The project carried out 3 visits in each museum. Beside these visits in Barcelona, the project organized two visits more in Madrid in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration at the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of History of Madrid. The results were published in social media and in Catalan press media. Regarding the dissemination between the academic and scientific community, the project was presented at several international congresses in Madrid, Stockholm and Bologna.
